Beurlay: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Food and Drink

The Pâtisserie Beurlay was founded in 1848 by the Barraud family. It was one of the first producers of the “authentic Galette charentaise”, flavoured with a touch of angelica.

Culture and History

The Church of Sainte-Madeleine in Beurlay dates back to the 12th century. Its Romanesque chancel apse features three superimposed levels. The bell tower, positioned to the side, is unusual; a chapel is located on the ground floor.

In 1153, Beurlay was among the possessions of Saintes Abbey. The present-day commune was formed in 1824 through the merger with Saint-Thomas-du-Bois; ruins of its church remain. The explorer René Caillé acquired a house in Beurlay in 1832 and became a farmer there.

The local history also includes the Moulin Rouge tower windmill, which was inaugurated on 17 June 2007. There are six washhouses in the village centre: two below the church and four below Freussin. The Lavoir de la Fontaine Sainte-Madeleine washhouse lies below the church of Beurlay.

Nature and Trails

The circular hiking trail “Du Freussin au four à pain à Beurlay et Sainte-Radegonde” is 17.51 km long and starts and ends at Beurlay’s church car park.

Surroundings

The historic site of Pigeonnier et vestiges de l’abbaye de Montierneuf is located near Beurlay. The wider regional area is home to Fort de Lupin, Fort de Piédemont, Fort de l’Aiguille, Île Madame, Île de Nole and the Le Peu Princet hill.
