Culture and history

The Protestant temple of Étaules was built between 1859 and 1864. It has a tympanum depicting an open Bible.

The church of Étaules has modern stained-glass windows, installed in 1963 after the 1945 bombings and created by the master glassmaker Henri Guérin. The furnishings also include a carved oak pulpit.

In 1722, stones from the dilapidated Notre-Dame de l'Isle church were transported to Étaules. Some of them were used, with royal permission and support, to rebuild the present-day church.

The oyster marshland of Étaules comprises 25 oyster farms covering almost 100 hectares of oyster maturation ponds. The oyster specialities fine de claire, spéciale de claire and pousse en claire from Marennes-Oléron are produced there.

During walks through the freshwater marshland of Étaules, you can see vineyards rising above the marsh. The circular route “PR22: Marais salé, vers le port ostréicole d'Orivol” is a very easy 3.36-kilometre walk lasting around 40 minutes.
