Saint-Martin-De-Ré: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The almost completely preserved fortifications of Saint-Martin-de-Ré have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2008 and are part of the network of major Vauban sites. Designed by Vauban, the fortifications form a wall around seven kilometres long around Saint-Martin-de-Ré and connect the town with the citadel. Culture and History

The Musée Ernest Cognacq displays plans of the Vauban fortifications as well as a model of the fortress of Saint-Martin-de-Ré. Recognised as a Musée de France, the museum presents permanent and temporary exhibitions on art and history. In a chronological tour, it presents archaeological, historical and ethnographic collections on the history of Île de Ré; the collection themes also include navigation and fishing.

Another collection is dedicated to the history of penal colonies. It is connected with Saint-Martin-de-Ré's former role as a place where prisoners were held before being sentenced to penal colonies in French Guiana and New Caledonia.

The Hôtel de Clerjotte on Île de Ré is a rare Renaissance hôtel particulier and was built by Louis Clergeat at the end of the 15th century. Its main building combines Gothic elements with classical details in the wings. The Poudrière Saint-Louis was built in 1685 according to Vauban's plans, designed as a strategic location in the event of sieges, and could store up to 55 tonnes of gunpowder.

Paths and Views

A guided walking tour leads through the fortifications of Saint-Martin-de-Ré and explains the defence system developed by Vauban. The fortification wall is 11 metres high and 2 metres thick at this point. The church's observation bell tower offers an exceptional view.

West of the fortifications, in the direction of Loix, coastal paths offer impressive views of neighbouring Vendée.

On the Water

The Fantomas II offers approximately one-hour boat trips from Saint-Martin-de-Ré, during which the fortifications can be viewed from the water.

Market and Access

The covered Les Halles market is located at the port of Saint-Martin-de-Ré and is open daily from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. from 1 April to 30 September. Fresh produce and local specialities are available. The courtyard of the Hôtel de Clerjotte is freely accessible; admission to the museum is charged.
