Tours

Le Château-d’Oléron can be explored along several historic routes. The Circuit du patrimoine is a two-hour tour through the historic district, to the Citadel, the port and the former oyster huts, which now serve as workshops for craftspeople and artists. A shorter version takes 30 minutes and starts at the tourist office.

The Circuit des remparts is a walking route of around 2.5 kilometres around the town walls. Its route includes footbridges, elevated walkways, bridges over the moats, water-filled moats, bastions and redans.

Culture

The Citadel and fortifications of Le Château-d’Oléron are regarded as a work of the 17th century, with a main construction phase in 1630; they are attributed to Vauban. The Citadel now houses exhibition rooms and hosts cultural events.

The Pont Napoléon spans the Chenal de la Brande and is a small stone bridge dating from the late 18th century. The Chantier Naval Robert Léglise is the last local example of wooden boatbuilding on Île d’Oléron.
