Culture
The Prigny district is a medieval old village in Les Moutiers-en-Retz, with narrow lanes and historic masonry. The streets of Prigny are lined with high walls dating from the 14th and 15th centuries.
The Chapelle de Prigny was the first church of Les Moutiers-en-Retz and is called Église Saint-Jean-le-Baptiste. It dates from the 11th century and has four round-arched openings that reveal its early Romanesque style. Inside, it houses Baroque altarpieces from the 17th century as well as a Viking anchor.
The two choir bays of the Chapelle de Prigny contain three altarpieces and were classified as historic monuments by a decree dated 22 October 1913. Since November 2016, the chapel has been fully protected as a French historic monument.
After two years of construction work and a two-year closure, the Chapelle de Prigny reopened in 2025. It is considered one of the last surviving examples of early Romanesque architecture in a remarkable state of preservation.
The Lanterne des morts has been classified as a historic monument since 1913. It is lit whenever someone dies in the municipality and is the last functioning one of its kind.
Nature
A footbridge replacing the former lock at Port du Collet offers views over Bourgneuf Bay. Port du Collet is now a picturesque oyster harbour with a few moorings for pleasure boats.
The Église Saint-Pierre can be discovered along the hiking trail Le circuit de la campagne.
Local Life
Salt production is one of the municipality’s oldest activities and continues to shape its identity today. Tours of the “Tenue de Mareil” salt works provide insight into the history and operation of the salt works as well as salt production.
Salt produced on the salt marsh is sold at the salt works.
