Culture

The Remparts de Guérande have been classified as a Monument historique since 1877. The Porte Saint-Michel was built around 1450. The old town is also home to the Collégiale Saint-Aubin, a church in the flamboyant Gothic style that was rebuilt in the 15th and 16th centuries and has been classified as a Monument historique since 1840.

The Chapelle Notre-Dame-la-Blanche is considered the oldest building within Guérande’s city walls. The second Treaty of Guérande was signed in this chapel in 1381.

The Museum of the Porte Saint-Michel uses models, interactive elements, audiovisual media and multimedia to present the history of the structure, the fortifications and the medieval town. It offers its own tour with games, models and explanatory labels.

Nature

The salt marshes of Guérande are an internationally important wetland under the criteria of the Ramsar Convention. At the same time, they are classified as a ZICO area for little egrets, spoonbills and avocets.

The salt marshes are home to specialised flora. This includes sea aster (Aster tripolium), obione, rock samphire, glasswort and sea soda. Rock samphire is protected at national level.

Tours and Visits

The self-guided tour through the Cité médiévale takes around 30 minutes and is 1 kilometre long. The Sentier du Patrimoine runs through the village of Clis: the cultural and heritage trail takes 1 hour and 30 minutes and covers 2.8 kilometres.

From April to October, the Maison des Paludiers offers a guided 1.2-kilometre walk through the paludier village and the salt marshes. Along the way, visitors can follow the path of the water through to salt crystallisation. La Roulotte Bleue also offers guided visits to the salt marshes of Guérande, focusing on salt production and the working techniques of the paludiers.

LPO Loire-Atlantique offers ornithological and nature excursions on the Presqu'île Guérandaise all year round, including visits to the salt marshes of Guérande.

The area around Guérande is home to Plage de la Baule, the historic site of Tumulus de Dissignac, Plage Sainte-Marguerite, Église Notre-Dame-des-Dunes and Parc des Dryades.
