Culture and history

The Château de Châteaubriant is a medieval fortress and a Renaissance building. Its grounds include gardens that are free of charge and freely accessible from February to December. An also freely accessible 3D area shows the architectural development of the site from the 11th century to the present day.

The medieval town centre of Châteaubriant is bordered by former fortification walls that enclosed the town until 1860. It includes half-timbered houses, projecting sections of buildings, towers, a covered way, alleyways, small paths and 18th-century buildings. At the same time, it preserves the outline of a walled town at the foot of the Brient castle. The Église Saint Jean de Béré was built in the 11th century and contains a Baroque altarpiece and listed statues.

Digital culture

The Micro-Folie Châteaubriant is a free digital museum for all visitor groups. It displays works from numerous national and international museums in very high resolution, including the Louvre, the Château de Versailles and the Musée d’Orsay. The Micro-Folie also includes a publicly accessible virtual reality area with immersive cultural content.

Cycle paths

The greenway from Châteaubriant to Rougé is 13 kilometres long. The La Régalante cycle route also passes through Châteaubriant, running as a 58-kilometre section through the local area from Soulvache to La Meilleraye-de-Bretagne.

Memory and history

Self-guided visits to the Carrière de la Sablière are possible all year round. On 22 October 1941, 27 hostages from the Choisel camp were shot there; this took place in retaliation for the shooting of Lieutenant Colonel Holtz in Nantes two days earlier by a young resistance fighter. A permanent exhibition is dedicated to the hostages and the history of the Resistance.
