Nature

La Chevallerais borders the Canal de Nantes à Brest. Its towpath is used locally for walking and cycling. The Circuit du Canal also follows the canal’s towpath and is considered a peaceful walking route.

The official circular route along the canal offers a longer option covering a total of 12 kilometres; the average walking time is 3.5 hours. “Histoires en balade” is a 4.5-kilometre family walk with 13 stops and 13 historical anecdotes. It presents stories about the history of La Chevallerais, including threshing, women’s football champions, the theatre tradition, the Resistance, the history of the schools and the 50 shops of the 1950s.

Culture

The first stone of the Notre-Dame de Bonne Nouvelle church was laid in 1853, the church was blessed in 1856, and its original bell tower was completed in 1858. The building is 40 metres long and 9 to 20 metres wide; it was built in a style between Romanesque Revival and Gothic Revival.

The Fête des Battages et des Métiers anciens, held annually on the last Sunday in July, features folk groups and a rural market. Another local tradition is fouace chevalleraisienne: its recipe has been passed down through generations of bakers from La Chevallerais. Visitors can discover fouace around Easter or at the bakery on the Sunday of this festival.

History

The Notre-Dame de Bonne Nouvelle oratory was built in 1889 to protect a spring described as miraculous. People have been praying there for a long time; votive plaques bear inscriptions of thanks.

For the so-called “Chapelle dite du Vœu”, reference is made to a stone chapel mentioned in the Saffré archives in 1620, at a location near today’s leisure hall and town hall.

Geographical location
