The Bay of Pen-Bé consists of six beaches and is one of the places along the Route des Coquillages. Baie des Dames is a small, sheltered sandy beach with fine sand; access is via a staircase.

Coast

Pont-Mahé Bay is designated as a Natura 2000 site. Pont-Mahé Beach has adapted access for people with reduced mobility and is a spot for kitesurfing and windsurfing.

Nature

The dunes of Pont-Mahé extend over an area of 24 hectares and include white dunes, dry heathland and ponds. Access to the dunes of Pont-Mahé is reserved for pedestrians; bicycles are prohibited there. Five communities in the Pen Bé area are considered remarkable habitats at European level under the Habitats Directive.

Activities

When fishing for shellfish in the Bay of Pen-Bé, you can collect mussels, clams, cockles, razor clams and prawns. The intercommunal walking trail “Le Traict de Pen Bé” runs through the Pen Bé area and leads to Baie de Pont. The Baludik route in Assérac is approximately 3.5 kilometres long and accessible to pushchairs and scooters.

Culture

The salt marshes of Assérac are part of the Bassin du Mès, where around 20 salt farmers work across 400 hectares. The salt farmers maintain the salt landscape of Assérac using traditional techniques and tools that are several centuries old. The salt produced in the salt marshes of Assérac is known as “sel de Guérande”.

In the Traict de Pen Bé production area, professionals cultivate mussels, oysters and clams. The present-day church of Assérac was built in 1886.
