Nature and Trails
The Levée de la Divatte stretches for almost 16 kilometres from La Chapelle-Basse-Mer to Saint-Sébastien-sur-Loire and protects more than 2,000 hectares of land from flooding by the Loire. It was built between 1847 and 1856 as the last major levee constructed along the Loire. The Levée de la Divatte can be explored on foot or by bicycle, including along this route, offering open views of the Loire, its islands and the vegetable-growing landscapes.
Near La Pierre Percée, the Les Rives de Loire recreational area is located on the tourist road along the banks of the Loire. It offers a wooded natural landscape, a picnic area and play facilities. The Halte à vélo is designated as an “aire d’arrêt principale Loire à Vélo” and offers picnic tables, bicycle parking, sanitary facilities, an access car park and a covered shelter.
Culture and History
The Château de la Vrillière in La Chapelle-Basse-Mer is partially protected as a historic monument. It was rebuilt at the beginning of the 17th century from a residential building dating from the late 15th century. The complex is grouped around a rectangular courtyard, accessible through a portal in the classical style.
The Saint-Pierre-ès-Liens Priory was founded in the 10th or 11th century by monks from Marmoutier Abbey and was the first religious structure of the later parish of La Chapelle Basse-Mer. It was acquired by Reynald Secher on 13 May 1992. The priory was subsequently restored, the sacristy rebuilt, the cloister reconstructed and the original priory extended.
The Church of Notre-Dame de l’Assomption is a Neo-Gothic building constructed between 1874 and 1892. It houses a depiction of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary made from Carrara marble, a work by the sculptor Vallet, and is illuminated by two rose windows as well as stained-glass windows dedicated to the Virgin, designed by Paris-Reby and Meuret.
The Saint Simon Chapel was built in the 16th century on the site of an older sanctuary and restored in 1775. Its façade records the flood levels of 1711, 1783, 1856 and 1866. It contains a fresco from 1961 depicting regional occupations, painted by Georges Riom.
