Culture
Le séchoir à peaux is a former drying shed belonging to a tannery at the foot of Bellac's fortified rock. The Châsse de Bellac from around 1130 is a unique reliquary attributed to the workshops of Limoges and decorated with twelve enamelled copper medallions.
The birthplace of Jean Giraudoux houses La Digitale, an interactive, immersive museum presenting his work and life. The escape game “Secrets d'Etat(s)” there also offers a game about Jean Giraudoux's final moments.
The Théâtre du Cloître offers a multidisciplinary programme of live theatre, music, dance and circus performances from September to June. Every year, it also hosts the Festival National de Bellac, which includes theatre, dance, circus, street art and music.
The former fortifications are evidenced by stone walls that consisted of 19 towers or bastions. The 13th-century Pont de la Pierre is connected with the development of the former castle and links the Chapterie district. On the Saint-Sauveur spur stands the chapel of Notre Dame de Lorette, with a neo-Gothic façade and a 25-metre-high granite spire.
Along the Vincou
Along the Vincou, Bellac's riverbank includes a landscaped park at the foot of the medieval town. The picnic area Rives du Vincou is located on the riverbank near a motorhome parking area and a children's playground; a medieval bridge is also nearby.
Since 2017, the AAPPMA de Bellac has offered introductory fishing sessions as individual lessons by appointment. The meeting point is the Parc Aimé Vallat on the banks of the Vincou in Vieux Bellac.
Paths and Location
Le sentier des moulins is a short circular hike of around two hours along the slope beside the Vincou valley. It passes along the old road to Mortemart and the slopes of Chapterie and Saint-Sauveur.
Le chemin des diligences begins on the picturesque banks of the Vincou, follows the route of the former royal road from Bellac to Limoges and leads via Saint-Sauveur to the chapel of Notre Dame de Lorette.
The Haut Limousin Tourist Office is located on the main road through Bellac, which connects Limoges, Poitiers and Guéret.
