Culture
The Cité internationale de la tapisserie presents tapestries from the 15th to the 21st century, as well as carpets, cartoons and models. Around the creation of monumental works, it offers visitors woven experiences.
The municipal weaving workshop is located in the Maison du Tapissier, which houses a weaving workshop with monumental looms and historic tools shaped by centuries of use. Visitors can learn about weaving techniques there; a tapestry weaver also welcomes visitors for a meeting. The municipal weaving workshop can be visited throughout the year during the tourist office’s opening hours.
The municipal collection of Aubusson comprises 26 contemporary tapestries, which are freely accessible and offer an insight into the tapestry craft of Aubusson. The Manufacture Royale Saint-Jean brings together tapestry workshops, restoration workshops, two wool shops, painting workshops and exhibition galleries; weaving demonstrations are also offered there. The Manufacture Royale Saint-Jean also has a workshop certified for the protected geographical indication IGP “tapisserie d'Aubusson”.
The Atelier-Musée des Cartons de Tapisserie displays painted and gouache designs that are subsequently rendered in wool.
History
The remains of Aubusson Castle on the Marchedieu or Chapître hill have been protected as a historic monument since 8 February 1964. The Chapitre is a remnant of the castle of the Viscounty of Aubusson, built in the 11th century on a rocky spur overlooking the town.
Aubusson’s Site patrimonial remarquable is a heritage designation for a town whose preservation, restoration, rehabilitation or enhancement is in the public interest from a historical, architectural, archaeological, artistic or landscape perspective.
The Quartier de la Terrade was formerly a district of weavers and dyers; traces of the former family workshops and manufactories have been preserved there. The Pont de la Terrade was once the only crossing over the Creuse and connected the area where workers traditionally lived with the workshops where the tapestries were made. The Tour de l'Horloge is the last remaining section of the fortification wall that once enclosed Aubusson.

Various viewpoints in Aubusson offer expansive views over the town, the Creuse with its meanders and the terraced gardens. Aubusson’s free multimedia video guide offers four themed tours for exploring the local heritage: “Essentiel”, “Tapisserie”, “Patrimoine ancien” and “Patrimoine 20ème siècle”.
Guided tours of Aubusson’s heritage are offered year-round by cultural guides, by appointment. The “Aubusson et sa vallée” route passes through Aubusson’s historic districts and the Creuse Valley, ending with a panorama from the Tour de l'Horloge.
