The protected natural area of the Domaine d’Ors is freely accessible to pedestrians; visitors are asked to remain on the paths. In the municipality of Châteaufort, this natural area covers around 25 hectares, with wooded slopes and wet meadows in the valley floodplains. The Mérantaise River winds through the area for almost 2 km.

Local History and Culture

The Église Saint-Christophe de Châteaufort was built between 1838 and 1840 in the Napoléon III style. An interactive guide offers a tour of Châteaufort’s medieval town centre starting from Place Saint-Christophe and contains videos for each point of interest.

The Châteaufort motte known as “La Motte” has a diameter of 35 m, an area of 1,500 m² and a height of 9 m; it is one of the best-preserved mottes in Île-de-France.

The Moulin d'Ors was restored by the Parc in 1995, is considered high-quality historical heritage and is one of the last mills in this condition; it is visible from public areas.

The Chapelle du domaine d’Ors was the castle’s oratory, is no longer in use today and was renovated by the municipality. The Lavoir de Châteaufort is located near the Mérantaise. For a long time, it was a meeting place for local women, who washed their laundry there; it has been rehabilitated and is considered one of the notable elements of the local vernacular heritage, as well as one of the best-preserved examples of its kind in the municipality.

rechauffoir, a historical site, is located in the vicinity of Châteaufort. Château de Saint-Cloud, a château, is also located in the vicinity of Châteaufort.

In the wider region surrounding Châteaufort are the Musée de Luxembourg, a museum, and Palais Bourbon, a palace. Île de la Cité and Île Saint-Louis, each an island, are also located there, as well as Bois de Boulogne, a park, and Jardin du Luxembourg, a garden.

Hiking and the Year’s Cycle

The Parc naturel régional de la Haute Vallée de Chevreuse calls the hike “Les mille et une facettes du village de Châteaufort”. It starts at the Moulin d'Ors, takes 2 hours and 30 minutes, is 4.5 km long and has an elevation gain of 70 m.

The Foire Saint-Simon takes place every year on the third Sunday in October.
