Corbeil-Essonnes combines Romanesque and Gothic heritage with the history of mills, factories and riverside landscapes. This is particularly evident at the Église Saint-Étienne, the Cathédrale Saint-Spire and the Moulin Hutteau.
Culture
The Église Saint-Étienne has a Romanesque bell tower dating from around 1100. It was classified as a historic monument by decree of 25 March 1930. The covered market hall, Marché couvert, was also listed as a historic monument by decree of 16 February 1987.
The Moulin Hutteau is located on a small island in a side arm of the Essonne. Its grounds formerly housed the royal gunpowder factory and later served as a grain mill, chocolate factory and detergent factory. The Moulin Hutteau and the site of the former Essonnes gunpowder factory bear the Île-de-France region’s “Patrimoine d’intérêt régional” label.
The nave of the Cathédrale Saint-Spire dates from the 12th century, while its vaults and choir were not completed until the 15th century. The cathedral was classified as a historic monument in 1840. Guided tours with commentary can be arranged through the parish office.
In l’Isle lès Corbeil stands the Gothic chapel of the Commanderie Saint-Jean. It is the only surviving element of a significant monastic complex built at the beginning of the 13th century on the initiative of Queen Ingeborg of Denmark. The complex was under the authority of the Hospitaller and Military Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, now the Order of Malta, and was visited by several rulers, including Louis IX and Blanche of Castile.

The Cirque de l’Essonne stretches across Villabé and Corbeil-Essonnes and is a popular hiking area. The Essonne Departmental Council organizes numerous events and awareness-raising activities there.
The GR2 long-distance hiking trail follows the winding course of the Seine. Along this riverside landscape, coves, wooded areas and protected natural spaces alternate with the characteristic industrial heritage of Ris-Orangis and Corbeil-Essonnes.
