Culture
The parish church of San Vitu in Rutali is a Baroque church whose construction began in the 17th century and was completed in the 18th century. The church displays a gold-embroidered chasuble donated in 1860 by Empress Eugénie, the wife of Napoleon III. A gilded wooden statue of the Virgin Mary from the 19th century, known as “A Madunuccia”, can also be viewed there.
According to the dating by Madame Moracchini-Mazel, the Romanesque chapel of San Sari near U Loru in Rutali dates from the late 10th century or the first half of the 11th century.
The Santa Chjara Chapel stands at an altitude of 800 m on a plateau overlooking the Nebbiu, the plain from Bastia to Casinca, and the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian Seas. To celebrate Santa Chjara on 12 August, the inhabitants of Rutali make a morning pilgrimage to the chapel located on a pass at an altitude of 800 m. Mass is followed by a procession to a rock above Rutali and the Nebbiu.
During the celebration of Saint Roch, the small loaves called “i panioli”, made by the baker of Rutali, are blessed and distributed.
In the surrounding area is the medieval Ponte à Turrenu. It can be reached on foot via a path along the Bivincu, from which one trail leads to the ruined village of Turrenu and another via San Vitu to Rutali.
Nature
Rutali includes part of the Stella state forest. The Natura 2000 site Massif du Tenda et forêt de Stella includes Rutali in the Forêt de Stella sub-area.
Hiking
The Trà aghje è Pagliaghji hike follows paved mule tracks through fragrant maquis and offers views of the Nebbiu and the Gulf of Saint-Florent. The circular route is approximately 6 km long and takes 2.5 to 3 hours.
The Trà aghje è Pagliaghji route leads north of Rutali to a small cemetery containing the graves of six Moroccan riflemen who fell on 28 and 30 September 1943 during the Second World War while fighting against the German occupying forces.
The hiking trail above Rutali has only slight changes in elevation, leads through maquis with strawberry trees, oaks and some chestnut trees, and offers sea views to the east and west at an altitude of 600 m. The hiking trail can also begin near the Funtana Nova site; there is signposted route guidance and an orientation map there.
