Culture and history

According to historical research, the parish church of Saint-Martin was built in the 11th century. It was extended in 1380 and remodelled again in the 15th century. From 1440 to 1570, Saint-Martin served as the pro-cathedral of the Diocese of Mariana.

The high altar tabernacle of Saint-Martin Church features a relief of the Resurrection and, in niches, Saint Martin, the Virgin and Child, Saint Paul and Saint Peter. It is classified as a protected object; the protection was recorded on 16 March 1908. The high altar tabernacle was formerly attributed to the 17th century and comes from the former cathedral of Mariana, which was destroyed.

The Baroque church of Vescovato has a campanile. Behind its neoclassical façade are three richly decorated naves and a richly ornamented high altar.

La fontaine à l’aigle, a new cast-iron fountain, stands on Vescovato’s square. The first written references in the municipal archives to the possibility of a fountain on the square date from 1862. The Santa-Croce Brotherhood of Vescovato is associated with religious rites and singing during the Easter cycle.

The Mucchiatana Natura 2000 site includes coastal lagoons and Mediterranean salt meadows of the Juncetalia maritimi alliance among its listed habitats.
