Culture and History

In the hamlet of Pieve stands the bell tower of Canari, a historic monument built in the 17th century. The Couvent Saint-François, located in the centre of the village, was founded in 1506 and belonged to the Observant Friars Minor. The Baroque Church of Saint-François contains three marble slabs classified as historic monuments.

The Church of Sainte-Croix has a carved 16th-century lintel above the side door, which is classified as a historic monument; it still belongs to the Sainte-Croix brotherhood. The nave of Santa Maria Assunta consists of carefully fitted slabs of green slate from a nearby quarry. Its roof made of local stone, known as teghje, is supported by a sturdy, visible wooden structure.

Traditions and Exhibitions

The “Costume traditionnel” exhibition at the Conservatoire du Cap Corse features nine mannequins: eight women and one man. They are dressed according to the customs common in Corsica in the 19th century.

Landscape and Trail

In Imiza, the Sainte-Catherine Chapel offers visitors a view of the Agriate Desert and Pointe de Minerviu. A dedicated route leads through the surrounding area under the name “Pont génois et les moulins à eau (Itinéraire 5)”: the easy circular walk is 4 kilometres long, starts and ends in Canari, and takes 1 hour and 30 minutes.
