Sartène: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Sartène is designated as a “Ville d’Art et d’Histoire” and has a diverse urban, religious and natural heritage. The town overlooks the Gulf of Valinco and offers views as far as the Aiguilles de Bavella.

Culture and History

The former palace of the Genoese governors now houses Sartène Town Hall. The Échauguette is the last remaining part of the town walls from the 15th century. The Church of Santa Maria Assunta is also one of the highlighted cultural heritage attractions of Sartène. An audio-guided tour takes visitors through the historic streets for around one and a half hours and can be undertaken independently.

U Catenacciu is a religious procession that passes through the streets of Sartène’s old town every Good Friday. It begins at Sainte-Marie Church on Place Porta and follows a two-kilometre route.

The Musée de Préhistoire et d’Archéologie in Sartène preserves a significant collection of statue menhirs, which is outstanding in Corsican and Mediterranean megalithism. It presents the island’s archaeology from the earliest settlements nearly 10,000 years ago to the end of the Genoese period in the 15th century. From its location above Place Porta, the museum offers a panorama over the Gulf of Valinco.

The archaeological site of Cauria comprises the megalithic alignments of I Stantari and Rinaghju, with upright granite stones, menhirs and statue menhirs; they attest to human settlement of the site since the Neolithic period. Cauria also includes the Dolmen de Funtanaccia, considered the best-preserved dolmen in Corsica.

Wine and Regional Products

Domaine Saparale in Sartène welcomes visitors for special and varied wine tastings. At the caveau, the domaine welcomes visitors without a reservation and offers a tasting of two or three wines. With a reservation, Domaine Saparale also offers a private tour of the cellars and barrel cellar, followed by a wine tasting. A private tasting can be complemented with artisanally produced Nustrale cured meats, bread and cheese from the valley.

Domaine Fiumicicoli on the Route de Levie in Sartène offers wine sales and wine tastings. Clos Colonna is a third-generation family winery between Sartène and the Bay of Tizzano, near the menhirs of Paddaghiu.

Landscape and Nature

The Campomoro–Tizzano coastal path can be started in Tizzano and leads through Mediterranean landscapes and natural habitats. The protected area of Senetosa is open to the public.

At the hamlet of Tizzano in Sartène lies the sandy beach of Cala d’Avena at Pointe Lattoniccia; it is suitable for families and can be reached directly by car.
