At an altitude of 480 m, Cannelle overlooks the Gulf of Sagone; Cannelle and its surroundings also offer impressive views of the Gulf of Sagone. Despite numerous fires in 1943, 1956 and 1979, the village has preserved exceptionally lush vegetation. Cannelle is also known for its century-old camellias with pink and white flowers.

Paths

Cannelle can be explored on foot through its lanes, to viewpoints and along an old rural path. Rural paths allow walks around Cannelle; the tourist office can advise on marked circular trails suitable for different levels.

Culture and History

The parish church of Cannelle is dedicated to Saint Aurèle and is believed to date from the 16th century. Devotion to Saint Aurèle is very rare in Corsica. The Santa Maria church preserves a reminder of the Middle Ages.

Cannelle is home to a defensive tower built to protect the village, which is believed to date from the 16th century. The origins of Cannelle are traced back to antiquity; Ptolemy is said to have mentioned a fortified settlement called Canelata, which may correspond to the site of Punta di Cannelle.

West of the village of Cannelle, at the site of Villana, beyond the streams from the former Pieve church of San Ghjuvani di Cinarca, there is an ancient site associated with a Roman villa, a former agricultural estate. Of the three flour mills recorded in the municipality in the 19th century, one—the most significant in the canton—remained in operation until 1940.

Cannelle is associated with the Paravisini family. Maria Saveria Paravisini (1715–1750), born in Ajaccio and the wife of Giuseppe Maria Bonaparte (1713–1763), was the paternal grandmother of Napoleon I.
