Culture
The Musée Girodet houses the most extensive collection relating to the career and life of the painter Anne-Louis Girodet-Trioson, who was born in Montargis in 1767. It is located near EuroVelo 3, La Scandibérique. The Musée Historique de l’Amitié Franco-Chinoise in Montargis is open to the public.
The Église Sainte-Marie-Madeleine houses one of the most complete collections of works by 19th-century French stained-glass artists. It has a 23-metre-high nave and side aisles dating from the 12th to the 16th century. At the Église Sainte-Marie-Madeleine, the Jardin des Roses combines Chinese, Loiret and Orléanais roses with perennials and shrubs.
The Musée du cuir et des tanneurs is located in a 16th-century half-timbered house and presents the history of leather – from its raw production in tanneries to its use for leather goods, in the army, for hunting, in shoemaking and for clothing.
History
The Château Royal de Montargis site has a history spanning almost 900 years. During a guided tour of the site, visitors can also see underground areas such as cellars and the lower church.
The Quartier des Tanneurs is one of the oldest districts of Montargis and lies below the château. In the former tannery house in the Quartier des Tanneurs, a museum displays tools used by the workers of that time on Saturday afternoons.
Food and drink
In Montargis, Maison Mazet produces Prasline, a small caramelised almond made according to the original recipe created in 1636 by the Duke of Praslin’s steward. The traditional method of making Maison Mazet’s Prasline has been continued unchanged in Montargis for centuries since its creation.
Factorie Mazet offers two-hour pastry-making courses in Montargis, where participants make pastries and learn techniques for using Mazet praline products.
Waterways and routes
The Circuit des Ponts, created by the town of Montargis, leads to 17 bridges whose architecture and history are presented. Curiocity is a two-hour discovery trail in Montargis, where clues are used to explore sites, monuments, districts and gardens.
