Landscape

Gidy's rural landscape comprises large flat fields, a few small wooded areas at the westernmost edge of the Forêt d'Orléans, as well as wide-ranging views and very little variation in elevation.

There are agricultural tracks and walking paths within the municipality of Gidy. In addition, a shared-use path runs between the stadium and Beaurepaire and can be used for walking and cycling.

History

Historically, Gidy was characterised by wine and wheat cultivation. In 1824, there were 125 hectares of vineyards here; a small vineyard remained until the 2000s.

Culture

The Church of Saint-Sulpice has been mentioned in written records since the 12th century. Beneath its altar canopy are relics of Saints George, Clement, Honoré and Vincent, which were given to the church in 1802 by the Bishop of Orléans.

Saint-Sulpice was restored several times from the 1860s until 1906. The stained-glass windows added after the Second World War depict the life of Jesus and parables from the Gospel.

Since the 19th century, the Mass of the Croix de Moissons has been celebrated in Gidy on the second Sunday in September during the patronal festival. At this Mass, local residents bring crosses they have made themselves from wheat ears.

Getting Around

Gidy can be reached by car via the A10, the D955 and the D2020. REMI buses also run from Orgères-en-Beauce and from Orléans bus station. Route 11 serves Gidy at the roundabout at the entrance to the ZAE.
