Coullons: Holiday apartments and houses
Coullons showcases its history through surviving parts of its former fortifications, mills and religious buildings, as well as natural areas and designated routes. In Coullons, part of the former town wall has been preserved; it once protected the enclosed town. The presumed construction date of this former town wall is 1400. The tower on Place du Paturiau is a surviving remnant of Coullons’ town fortifications, which originally comprised 16 towers.
Culture and history
Architectural details have also been preserved at the former town mill on Rue de la Basse-Cour: it has semicircular natural-stone arches beneath which the water flows through under the building. The Grange du Prieuré is a 13th-century barn that for a long time provided shelter during floods for the farm animals belonging to the farms along the Loire. The Prieuré Sainte Marie is a 15th-century Benedictine priory with a distinctive hexagonal brick tower. The Chapelle du Château Dominuze was built in 1788 and restored in 1827.
The Lavoir near Pont Janson is a former washhouse on the banks of the Aquiaulne. A watermill stands on the Aquiaulne in the hamlet of Les Sallés. Château Dominuze dates from the 18th century and was extended in the 19th century. Château de Marcault, Château de la Ronce and Château de Gien are located in the area surrounding Coullons. Château de Cuissy lies in the wider region around Coullons.
The present choir and altar area of Église Saint-Étienne were built after a fire in the 15th century; the work was completed in 1549. Concerts are regularly held today at Église Saint-Étienne. Les Billots de Sologne is classified as an “Entreprise du Patrimoine Vivant” and as “Artisans Ébénistes de France”.
