Artenay: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Artenay is located in the Beauce region and is shaped by agriculture, particularly by the presence of a sugar factory. In the town centre, the Musée du Théâtre Forain is housed in the former Ferme du Paradis, a building characteristic of Beauce’s agricultural architecture.
Culture
The Musée du Théâtre Forain presents four centuries of the history of travelling theatre, including Molière, the Commedia dell’arte and portable theatres that once travelled through the French countryside. In the courtyard, visitors can view a recently restored former caravan used as accommodation by travelling actors.
The Musée du Théâtre Forain also includes archaeological and palaeontological galleries in the former sheep barn. They present the history of the Beauce region and the canton of Artenay from antiquity to the Middle Ages. Access to these galleries is only possible by prior reservation.
The Prison d’étape is used for exhibitions and cultural events. Individual and group visits are possible by telephone appointment with the town hall. The preserved cell walls still contain oak planks and interior shutters, as well as numerous graffiti left by former prisoners.
In the Église Saint-Victor d’Artenay, the Stations of the Cross comprise 14 framed 19th-century oil paintings by André Joseph BODEM (1791–1831). The 14 stations are protected as historic monuments in the category of movable objects.
History
The Cinémobile transforms into a mobile cinema with 100 seats and stops on some Sundays at the Place de l’Eglise in Artenay. Its screening programme and projection dates are published monthly on the designated Ciclic page.
Rural Life
The Moulin de pierre d’Artenay was built in 1849 with three millstones and the innovative Système Berton of the time. It continues to mill wheat using traditional methods and offers tours and demonstrations. A nearby farm connected with the Moulin de pierre d’Artenay displays a collection of restored old agricultural machinery.
Artenay’s weekly market takes place every Thursday morning on the square in front of the town hall.
