Berthenay: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Church of Saint Martin contains a stained-glass window dated 1878 by Armand Clément, a pupil of Lobin, depicting the charity of Saint Martin. Two small statues of Saint Martin, as a bishop and as a soldier, can also be seen there.

Culture and History

The Chapel of La Baillardière has a ceiling made up of 174 painted wooden panels, each featuring a different motif. The Manoir de la Baillardière is partially listed as a historic monument; the protection covers the chapel ceiling and a 17th-century staircase.

The Grange aux Moines in Berthenay has been dated to 1299. It is fully listed as a historic monument; the listing took effect on 18 April 2003. To supply the Abbey of Saint-Martin de Tours, the Grange aux Moines housed goods transported by boat to Tours from the ports of Berthenay and Portoville. The building stands on an artificially raised mound that protected it from the waters of the Loire or the Cher. Since Heritage Days in September 2022, the Grange aux Moines has no longer been open to visitors until a preservation programme has been completed.

Routes

The 14-kilometre Loire à Vélo circuit through Berthenay offers views of the Loire and the Cher. Three hiking trails dedicated to Saint Martin have been created in Touraine, allowing hikers and tourists to discover the religious heritage associated with him, as well as his history and legends.

The “Confluence Loire et Cher – Cycle Route No. 14” is 13 kilometres long and takes approximately one hour. The “Confluence Loire et Cher” cycle route is signposted with green-and-white signs and the number 14.

Getting Around

The Savonnières SNCF railway station is 2.4 kilometres from the centre of Berthenay and is located on the Tours–Saumur–Angers–Nantes railway line.
