Maintenon: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Aqueduc de Maintenon remains the landmark of the ambitious project to divert water from the Eure to the fountains of Versailles. The Canal Louis XIV was built by La Hire and Vauban to convey water to the park and fountains of Versailles.

Culture and History

The Château de Maintenon, a historic site, is located near Maintenon. It is a former medieval fortress. At the beginning of the 16th century, Jean Cottereau extensively transformed the château; he was the financial treasurer of Louis XII. In the 17th century, it became the residence of Madame de Maintenon, the wife of the Sun King. The estate’s gardens are attributed to Le Nôtre. The Château de Maintenon, its gardens and its park are now open to the public year-round.

Landscape

Along the Canal Louis XIV, there are several kilometres of walking paths beside the Eure on the edge of wooded areas. Along this walking route, you can see preserved bridges, vaults, rows of trees, embankments and other earthworks.

The surrounding area of Maintenon also includes the Château de Morville, a château; the Prieuré Saint-Thomas, a historic site; and the Château de Nogent-le-Roi, a historic site.
