Villeferry combines traces of history with a landscape above the Brenne Valley. In 1204, the village was known as Villa Ferri. The name Villa Ferri and the 15th-century fortified house refer to different points in the history of the village.

The type 1 ZNIEFF Haut de Monde de Villeferry covers 0.30 km² and extends across Villeferry and Arnay-Sous-Vitteaux. Haut-de-Monde à Villeferry is included as a type 1 ZNIEFF within a higher-level type 2 ZNIEFF. Haut de Mondé reaches almost 500 metres in elevation and towers above the Brenne Valley. Its areas consist mainly of meadows and heathland. The village road also conveys a tangible impression of the topography: it follows an ascending route to meadows and fields above the Brenne Valley. In the village landscape, the ascent connects the village road with the higher open areas. Above the Brenne Valley, Haut de Mondé forms a visible upper line of the landscape. From the village, the ascending road leads to the higher meadows and fields. On a walk around the village, it is possible to follow the transition from the village to the open countryside.

Hiking and walking are possible in the countryside around Villeferry. Mountain biking is possible on the slopes of Haut de Mondé. On foot, the landscape around the village is the main focus, whereas mountain biking is explicitly confined to the slopes of Haut de Mondé. The elevation, open meadows and heathland provide the setting for these activities.

Château de Villeferry and historical orientation

The Château de Villeferry is a 15th-century fortified house with two square and two round towers. The château is privately owned. Villeferry has no church. The four towers give the building a mixed form, with both square and round aspects.

Cheese and former wine-growing history

At the Château de Villeferry, France Process produces its own cheeses from milk and cultures in a modern cheese dairy seven days a week. In 2026, the École Française de Technologie Fromagère (EFTF) was due to open at the headquarters of France Process, the Château de Villeferry. The two-week professional cheese-making courses organised by France Process combine theoretical and practical instruction. The cheese production and the planned training are based at the Château de Villeferry.

Wine is also part of Villeferry’s historical heritage: the village was once considered one of the canton’s most important wine-growing areas.
