Wine and Local History

The appellation d’origine contrôlée “Puligny-Montrachet” was recognised in 1937. According to the data reported for 2008, white wines accounted for 99 percent of the production of the Puligny-Montrachet wine-growing region. The Chardonnay B grape variety became firmly established on the slopes of Puligny-Montrachet in the 18th century.

Culture and Historical Traces

The village’s historic buildings include the Oratoire dit Chapelle Saint-Charles, which was built in 1740. The Church of the Assumption in Puligny-Montrachet dates from the 13th century. A chapel on the left was donated by Charles de Mypont and Jeanne de Lugny in the late 15th century.

Getting Around

The Balade en Montrachet is a culinary walking trail through vineyard paths, passing wine cellars and winemakers’ houses. The car park for the Balade en Montrachet is located at Place des Marronniers in Puligny-Montrachet, opposite the Hotel-Restaurant Le Montrachet.

The Puligny-Montrachet appellation includes 17 Climats classified as Premier Cru and 4 Grands Crus. At Olivier Leflaive, a visit to the vineyards provides insights into the historically delineated Climats de Bourgogne, the influence of the subsoils, wine classification, and the work carried out in the vineyard and by the winemaker. At Maison Chanzy, three selected exceptional Grands Crus are tasted, accompanied by golden-brown baked Gougères.
