Culture and History

Dijon's remarkable heritage area covers 97 hectares and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage perimeter of the Climats du vignoble de Bourgogne. The protected historic area follows the course of the former medieval city walls and includes around 3,000 buildings, including more than 120 protected townhouses.

The Palais des Ducs et des États de Bourgogne was initially built in the 14th century as a residence for the Dukes of Burgundy and later housed the Estates of Burgundy. Part of the palace is home to the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon, officially founded in 1799, which preserves more than 140,000 works. Construction of the palace extended from the 14th to the 19th century; the museum has an exhibition area of just under 5,000 square metres.

The Musée archéologique is located in the last surviving convent building of the Saint-Bénigne Abbey; visible construction phases date back to the 11th century. It presents regional collections from prehistory to the early Middle Ages and displays significant archaeological discoveries. The Musée d’Art sacré in the Sainte-Anne church preserves important examples of Burgundy's cultural heritage, including goldsmithing, paintings, sculptures and furnishings. The Musée de la Vie bourguignonne conveys the history and ethnography of Burgundy, particularly Dijon, through almost 35,000 objects and works of art.

The Parcours de la Chouette is a one-hour circular tour with 22 stops through old Dijon, beginning at Place Darcy. The Chapelle Sainte-Croix de Jérusalem, built in 1459, is open to visitors and presents works of art in a musical setting. The Puits de Moïse consists of a seven-metre-high hexagonal pedestal with six sculptures of Old Testament prophets by Claus Sluter. The Tour Philippe le Bon is a 46-metre-high medieval watchtower with six floors and offers panoramic views over Dijon from its terrace.

The Jardin de l’Arquebuse combines a museum, a planetarium and a botanical garden for communicating scientific topics. The botanical garden of the Jardin de l’Arquebuse includes a botanical school, a rose garden, an arboretum, an insect hotel, beehives and a wildflower meadow.

Food and Drink

La Cave de la Cité offers 3,000 wine references, including 250 wines served by the glass, and enables personalised tastings. The Cuisine Expérientielle at the Cité internationale de la gastronomie et du vin offers culinary shows, cooking duels with guest chefs, masterclasses, and workshops in cooking, patisserie and mixology.
