Tréfumel: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

In Tréfumel, Romanesque architectural history and the landscape of the falun deposits come together in a striking way. The Church of Sainte-Agnès de Tréfumel is considered a rare example of a Romanesque church from the 11th and 12th centuries. The bell tower incorporated into the church was added in the 15th century and is supported by four wooden posts.

Culture and Architectural History

Inside the church, two tombstones also refer to the history of the area: they display the coats of arms of the Coëtquen-Beaumanoir and Hingant du Hac families. Another historic building is the Château de la Rivière-Bintinaye in Tréfumel, an unfinished reconstruction dating from the second half of the 18th century. The Château de la Rivière-Bintinaye was built entirely from shell limestone from the falun deposits.

The rural houses of Tréfumel, built between the 16th and 18th centuries, are made of falun limestone. They reflect the prosperity brought by linen and hemp weaving over several centuries. Due to the age and quality of its rural architectural heritage, Tréfumel bears the designation “Communes du patrimoine rural de Bretagne”.

Falun and Natural Environment

The Maison des Faluns in Tréfumel is an interactive geological visitor and exhibition centre. In an interactive and playful way, it presents the history of the former warm, shallow sea of the faluns, as well as the animal and plant life passed down through traces of the past. Throughout the year, the Maison des Faluns offers temporary exhibitions, activities focused on natural and cultural heritage, and conferences.

The north-western quarter of Tréfumel’s municipal territory, which borders the Rance, consists of flood meadows. The La Perchais open-pit quarry in Tréfumel is a place of interest.

Circular Trails and Cycle Route

Tréfumel is located approximately 1 km from the GR®34–GR®37 connection. The “Faluns du Quiou à Tréfumel” circular trail is 6 km long and takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes. The 5 km “Tréfumel, Joyau du pays des Faluns” heritage trail takes approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes and starts at Place de l’Église.

For cyclists, cycle route V403 continues through the Pays des Faluns near Tréfumel.
