Ploerdut: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

Since 1990, Ploërdut has held the “Commune du patrimoine rural de Bretagne” label. Historical evidence ranges from the Gallo-Roman use of the Locuon quarry to Romanesque churches and chapels with noteworthy furnishings and decorative details.

Culture and history

The Locuon quarry was exploited by the Gallo-Romans to build the city of Vorgium in Carhaix. The Église Saint-Pierre is listed as a Monument historique and is one of the rare examples of Romanesque art in Brittany. Its nave and aisles from the late 11th and early 12th centuries have been preserved; the nave arcades date from the second half of the 11th or the first half of the 12th century.

Sacred architecture

The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Crénénan was built in the 15th century and altered and expanded in the 17th and 19th centuries. Inside, it has rich furnishings, including a tabernacle, an altarpiece and a Tree of Jesse. The painted paneling of the nave depicts the life of the Virgin Mary. The chapel also contains twelve rafters or structural timbers from the roof construction.

The Chapelle de Lochrist originated in the Romanesque period; the nave and aisles of the original building have been preserved. The Chapelle Saint-Michel is a 17th-century chapel built on a remote hilltop. Its furnishings include an elaborately designed wooden altarpiece and a group of statues depicting Saint Apollonia and two of her tormentors.

Nature and trails

The “Circuit des sources de l’Aër” circular trail is a 13- to 18-kilometre hiking route in Ploërdut. The Circuit de Crénénan passes through preserved forests and traditional sunken lanes.

Market and tradition

The Marché du bourg, Ploërdut’s market, takes place on Fridays from 4 p.m. at the Place de la République and offers local products such as cheese, honey, flour, fruit, vegetables and bread. The Pardon of Notre-Dame de Crénénan takes place every year on the first Sunday after 15 August.
