In Muzillac, the Étang de Pen Mur combines a 35-hectare expanse of water with a diverse landscape of heathland, forests, meadows and water. The southern part of the Étang de Pen Mur is protected within the Natura 2000 network as the Special Protection Area “Baie de Vilaine” and the Special Area of Conservation “Estuaire de Vilaine”, as well as a type 1 ZNIEFF.

Nature at the Étang de Pen Mur

Among other species, otters, a western green lizard, the Gazé butterfly, the Mercurial bluet dragonfly and the Asphodèle d’Arrondeau plant have been identified at the Étang de Pen Mur.

Paths through landscape and history

The Circuit des Chouans combines architectural discoveries with the local fauna and flora as well as the bocage landscapes. The Circuit des Vignes follows agricultural paths, former sunken lanes and a section of the GR 34, the customs officers’ path. The Circuit de la Voie Ferrée is a 9 km hiking trail starting in front of the Tourist Office. It follows the former railway line towards La Roche-Bernard, which opened in 1903 and was closed in 1948.

Architecture and culture

The Vieux Couvent was built in the 17th century as an Ursuline convent where the girls of the community were taught. The surviving wing was renovated, converted and extended in 1990 to accommodate the cultural centre. Cultural events take place there throughout the year.
