Santec: Holiday Apartments and Houses
Santec offers 14 kilometres of coastline with white sandy beaches, dunes, forest paths and various activities on the water.
Coastline
The coastline of Santec consists of white sandy beaches stretching over 14 kilometres. Plage du Dossen lies opposite Île de Sieck and extends for 1.5 kilometres of fine sand. Plage du Theven forms a natural harbour for numerous recreational anglers.
Île de Sieck is surrounded by water again about two and a half hours after low tide. At low tide, it is possible to walk around Île de Sieck from Plage du Dossen, provided the owners permit this. Depending on the tides, various types of coastal fishing can be practised in Santec, and fish, shellfish or crustaceans can be found; no fishing licence is required for this, but species and habitat protection rules apply.
Nature
Forêt domaniale de Santec covers 97 hectares and is home to rare coastal plant species as well as orchid populations. It is crossed by public paths and has a fitness trail; a path from the “Bon vent” Centre continues towards Plage du Dossen.
Paths
Circuit du Pouldu is a two-hour circular trail that starts and ends at the car park of the Pouldu playground complex. It offers views of Île de Batz, Roscoff and cultivated fields. Circuit de la Croix Celtique can be cycled with children on small paved roads through the fields.
Circuit du Dossen runs through the dunes and Forêt domaniale de Santec and offers views of Plage du Dossen and Île de Sieck. The long-distance hiking trail GR 34, also known as the Customs Path, crosses Santec along the coast.
Water Sports
Centre de Glisse de Santec offers water-based activities from the age of four, as well as equipment hire, courses and lessons for adults and children. Activities include land sailing, kayaking, water walking, surfing, bodyboarding, stand-up paddleboarding, a large SUP for eight people and wingfoiling. The Centre also hires out kayaking equipment and offers kayaking excursions to explore the islets of Santec.
At Plage du Dossen, activities including funboarding, kitesurfing and land sailing take place seasonally. Dossen Surf School offers surfing and stand-up paddleboarding lessons, as well as introductory sessions and courses at Plage du Dossen for people aged six and over from April to November. Ecole de Surf du Léon offers surfing lessons at Dossen in Santec for people aged eight and over and provides all the equipment. Cowabunga at Dossen offers surfing lessons from April to December and equipment hire all year round.
Culture and History
Chapelle du Dossen bears the name “ITRON VARIA AR MOR” (“Our Lady of the Sea”). Chapelle Saint Claude was built in Le Dossen in 1962 to formalise worship there; it bears the name of an older chapel that was presumably covered by sand. Currently, only four masses are celebrated at Chapelle du Dossen, including the Mass for the Feast of the Assumption of Mary on 15 August.
Santec’s cultural heritage includes prehistoric sites, graves, a chapel, a washhouse, a cross, a well and a fisherman’s house. Seven Gallic salt-working sites in Santec provide evidence of salt production and trade.
