Quimperlé lies where the Ellé and Isole rivers converge to form the Laïta, a tidal ria. This water landscape stretches from wooded hills to coastal estuaries and has significant biodiversity, with numerous birds and fish.
Water and landscape
The Laïta was historically navigable, enabling Quimperlé to serve as a seaport in the past. Today, the Saint-Nicolas canoe and kayak centre in Quimperlé provides access to the sea via the Laïta. At the La Mothe canoe and kayak centre, the Glenmor chain ferry allows people to cross the Ellé independently during the warm season.
Historic architecture
The Pont Lovignon, also known as the “Pont Fleuri”, is a historic monument built in the 14th century with three granite arches. The Hôpital Frémeur is a medieval hospital whose history as a place for the sick spans more than five centuries. The Saint-Eutrope chapel belonging to the Hôpital Frémeur contains remarkable furnishings.
The Sainte-Croix Church is a Romanesque building with a distinctive circular floor plan. The Benedictines founded Sainte-Croix Abbey in the 11th century. Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption dates from the 13th and 15th centuries.
The Maison des Archers features medieval architecture typical of Quimperlé, with thick granite walls and pointed arches. It has been restored over the past few decades and now serves as a cultural and tourist centre.
Paths and urban culture
The Chemin Bleu is the permanent component of a multi-year artistic, heritage conservation and tourism project run by the town of Quimperlé. At the same time, it is an easy 30-minute walk starting from the tourist office in Quimperlé. The route is accessible to wheelchair users accompanied by another person and to families with pushchairs.
Market and seasonal exhibition
The market at Place Hervo takes place on Sunday mornings. A temporary exhibition is held every summer in the Chapelle des Ursulines.
Town centre and other places
Quimperlé railway station is a few minutes’ walk from the town centre and is served daily by TER BreizhGo and TGV inOui.
