Plounéour-Ménez: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
The signposted Sentier des Mémoires, described as very easy, leads through the town centre and beyond. The route is 2 kilometres long and features seven information boards about the history of the commune of Plounéour-Ménez.
Culture and Townscape
The historic site of Abbaye du Relec is located near Plounéour-Ménez. It was founded in 1132 by monks from Bégard and is also called “Abbatia de Reliquiis”. Its abbey church is protected as a historic monument and is a rare surviving example of Cistercian architecture in Brittany.
The Église Saint-Yves, a church in the vicinity of Plounéour-Ménez, and the monumental archway in Plounéour-Ménez have been classified as historic monuments since 1914; since 1925, the protection has also included the calvary cross and the parish enclosure.
The weavers’ houses are also part of the historic townscape. They date from the 17th and 18th centuries and bear witness to the linen trade in the region. Weavers’ houses can still be seen on walks through the villages of Plounéour-Ménez, but they remain privately owned.
Nature and Landscape
The park of Abbaye du Relec is now a preserved natural area. Water-management structures from the former monastic estate are still visible there. Above the abbey lies the du Diry moorland in the upper reaches of the Queffleuth catchment area. It forms part of a moorland complex extending from the Relec pond higher up to the ridges.
The du Diry moorland lies within the registered area of the Monts d’Arrée, in a Natura 2000 zone and in an area classified as a ZNIEFF. The moorland and marginal biotopes support remarkable flora and fauna.
The peaks Roc'h Trédudon, Roc ar Feunteun and Roc Trévezel are located in the vicinity of Plounéour-Ménez. The wider regional surroundings of Plounéour-Ménez also include Mont de Saint-Michel, a mountain.
