Plouguerneau has a 45-kilometre coastline with cliffs, headlands, peninsulas and sandy beaches.

Landscape and Trails

There are 11 signposted hiking trails in Plouguerneau, running through abers, dune areas and valleys. Circular route 3, “À la découverte de Spins”, is a 6-kilometre walking route with a walking time of around two and a half hours. Circular route 8bis passes through wetlands considered to be particularly rich in biodiversity.

Maritime Heritage

In the second half of the 19th century, Plouguerneau developed a significant goémonier fleet. The Écomusée des Goémoniers et de l’Algue in Plouguerneau preserves Breton maritime heritage, particularly the history of the goémoniers and the use of algae. It offers exhibitions, guided tours, workshops and events on the harvesting and processing of algae.

ALGAE is a cultural and scientific centre dedicated to the discovery and appreciation of algae. ALGAE offers workshops, nature excursions, lectures and immersive experiences. In the Church of Notre-Dame de Lilia, seaweed harvesting is depicted as a scene from the parish’s traditional everyday life.

Culture and History

Iliz-Koz is a medieval necropolis in Saint-Michel in Plouguerneau. Iliz-Koz has an educational trail with explanatory panels; public tours take place under supervision.

Recurring celebrations for All Saints’ Day, Easter and Saint-Laurent take place in the Chapelle Saint-Laurent et Saint-Étienne. Keroudern is the birthplace of Michel Le Nobletz (1577–1652), an important figure in the evangelisation of Lower Brittany. The Chapel of Notre-Dame de Délivrance was built in 1845.

Water and Nature

The Île Vierge Lighthouse is 82.50 metres high and is considered the tallest lighthouse in Europe and the tallest lighthouse in the world made of cut stone. The tower of the Île Vierge Lighthouse has 365 steps and is lined inside with 12,500 opaline tiles. Next to it stands the small lighthouse, a 33-metre-high granite tower that was commissioned in 1845. A guided tour of the small Île Vierge Lighthouse includes boat transport from the Castel Ac’h slipway in Plouguerneau.

Glaz Evasion’s excursions travel across the waters of Stagadon below the Île Vierge Lighthouse, where seals may be spotted. The municipality of Plouguerneau manages its harbours, with more than 400 berths used mainly by recreational vessels.

The Pont Krac’h, also known as the Pont du Diable, was restored in 2008 and rebuilt identically without modern materials. It crosses the Aber-Wrac’h and connects Plouguerneau with Lannilis at low tide. On Île Venan there is a Neolithic cairn approximately 6,000 years old.
