Pointe Saint-Mathieu is a coastal site with steep cliffs shaped by the wind and sea. The GR34, also known as the Sentier des Douaniers, follows the coast from Pointe Saint-Mathieu to Bertheaume and allows for nearly 14 kilometres of coastal walks around the municipality.

Coast and Countryside

The Plage du Trez-Hir, Plage des trois curés, Plage de Bertheaume and Plage de Sainte Anne are located in the vicinity of Plougonvelin. The Abbaye Saint-Mathieu de Fine-Terre is also located near Plougonvelin.

Sea and Activities

In the Iroise Sea, Rando Mer offers coastal hikes, snorkelling excursions, water raids, diving trips, experiences on an underwater educational trail and environmental education. At Bertheaume Iroise Aventure, there are two large zip lines measuring 100 and 200 metres in length, one of them around 38 metres above the sea. There is also an introduction to a via ferrata around the fortified island.

Fort de Bertheaume is open to the public. The Fort de Dellec and the Tour Vauban are also located near Plougonvelin.

Culture and History

The Abbey of Saint-Mathieu was founded at the end of the 11th century; the partially preserved abbey church was classified as a historic monument in 1867. The Chapelle Notre-Dame-de-Grâce houses a small museum with remains of the former abbey.

The Musée Mémoires 39-45 presents an exhibition spread over five floors, focusing on eyewitness accounts and anecdotes and illustrated by thousands of objects, documents and photographs. Its themed rooms tell the story of the war in Brittany through eyewitness accounts.

The Église Saint Gwenaël is located near Plougonvelin and in the centre of Plougonvelin; there is a car park nearby. Its churchyard contains a medieval stone cross and a 19th-century mission cross. Both are located by the former cemetery surrounding the building.
