Culture and history

The Calvary cross of Locmélar was created from kersantite in 1600 and dates from the 16th century. It was restored by Donnard from Landerneau. The Church of Saint Mélar has a 33-metre-high bell tower, which is an example of the Beaumanoir type, and was listed as a historic monument in 1934. The main altar of Locmélar is decorated with scenes from the martyrdom of Saint Mélar. The Fontaine Saint-Mélar is associated with the local tradition that its water cured rheumatism.

Nature

Landscapes with bocage hedgerows and heathland have been partially preserved in Locmélar. Numerous paths accessible for hiking offer the opportunity to discover a diverse landscape of fields, meadows, pastures, forests, heathland, rivers and streams. The Elorn Valley and part of its tributaries have been part of a Natura 2000 site since 2007.

Things to do

The Pen ar Prat circular route begins at the car park by the church. As a hiking route, it is 13 kilometres long and has a stated duration of 3 hours and 30 minutes. It is also a 13-kilometre mountain biking route with a stated duration of 1 hour and 30 minutes. Sights along the Pen ar Prat circular route include the small Kéravel forest and the former village of Roc'h Duff.
