Landscape

Lannilis lies on a watershed between the two Abers; small streams bordered by wetlands drain into them. To the northeast, Lannilis is bordered by the Aber Wrac’h, and to the southeast by the Aber Benoît. The Aber Wrac’h in Lannilis is designated as a Type 1 ZNIEFF.

Trails

A branch of the Véloroute du Pays des Abers runs via Plouvien and Lannilis to the port of Aber Wrach in Landéda. Lannilis also has three officially designated tourist trails.

Culture

The Chapelle Saint-Yves du Bergot is located in Bergot in Lannilis. It is listed as a historic monument, has a main construction phase dating from the 16th century, and bears the date 1685. The Chapelle Saint-Sébastien was built around 1640 in response to a plague epidemic. It is a preserved and accessible religious building dating from the 17th century.

The parish church of Lannilis also combines architectural history with ecclesiastical art. Work began in 1874, and the building was consecrated on 12 September 1876. Its organ has 19 stops and 1,102 pipes; it was first played there on 14 September 1851 and is used for church services and concerts. A display case in a side chapel presents remarkable examples of ecclesiastical gold- and silversmithing from the parish and several surrounding parishes.

The Chapelle Notre-Dame du Traon houses a polychrome wooden group depicting the Flight into Egypt, dating from the 15th or 16th century. In the chapel’s fountain structure there is a millstone probably dating from the Iron Age, associated with the milling tradition of the Traon Valley. Some authors describe the Calvary cross at the Chapelle Notre-Dame du Traon as one of the oldest crosses of its kind in Brittany.

Markets and Festivals

A market is held in Lannilis on Wednesdays and continues to attract many people. A permanent fixture in the local events calendar is the Foire aux Moules de Lannilis: it has been held since 1980 and brings together several thousand food lovers every year. The event combines mussel dishes with grilled food and a varied music program, including traditional Breton music and other entertainment.
