Saint-Maden: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The oldest parts of Saint-Jean Church date from the Romanesque period and have largely retained their original structure, with a single-nave body and a smaller choir with a flat-ended apse.

History and Culture

Saint-Jean Church was altered in the mid-15th century. In the 18th century, the northern chapel was raised and the southern chapel was built. Today, La Houssaye retains the ruins of a 13th-century keep as well as several buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries.

The Manoir de La Motte is a residential building dating from the 16th and 17th centuries, built entirely from shell limestone on the banks of the Rance. Its architectural details include dormer windows with curved gables and Renaissance-inspired decoration featuring caryatids and triglyphs.

At the Moulin des Rosays, the mill leat still features impressive granite masonry made of large blocks; the location of the former wheel axle is also still discernible. The Manoir de La Bigotais is a large 17th-century manor house whose decorative repertoire is based on Renaissance models. In La Réhaudais, the course of an old road bears the name Chemin des Romains and bears witness to the existence of a settlement and a thoroughfare dating from the Gallo-Roman period.

The Mémorial des Champs Pillais commemorates the liberation struggle that took place in Saint-Maden on 1 and 2 August 1944. It is located at a crossroads near the hamlet of La Sècherie.

Landscape and Trails

The Site de la Gravelle is the starting point for the Les virées madennaises route. It includes a pond and a natural leisure area. There is also a covered shelter with sanitary facilities.

The Les virées madennaises route follows the banks of the old Rance. Along the way, you can see beautiful houses made of Pierre de jauge, characteristic of the Pays des Faluns. The La Grande Virée route takes an average of three to three and a half hours and is 12.85 kilometres long.

Fleur de Jour offers self-guided donkey treks lasting from two hours to a full day along the marked trails of the Saint-Maden municipality. Guided donkey treks are also available, either organised or arranged on request. Together with guests, Fleur de Jour also develops donkey treks lasting several hours or several days along the Rance towards Dinan, Dinard or Rennes.
