Culture and History

The Église Saint-Gildas is a 16th- and 17th-century building. It consists of a nave, a side aisle, a bell tower, an entrance porch, an ossuary, a baptismal font, and a seigneurial chapel. However, its construction phases go back further: the choir and the northern transept arm date from the second half of the 15th century, while the nave, southern transept arm, and southern porch date from the 16th century. The tower was built between 1587 and 1623 by O. Tili; restoration work took place in 1787. By decree of 7 January 1929, the church was classified as a historic monument.

Inside, the visible, panelled wooden beams form a vault; the wall supports are carved and the tie beams are moulded. On the exterior façades, the gables feature decorations with hooks, chimeras, and pinnacles.

The Chapelle des Filles de la Croix in Coatpiquet in Magoar dates from 1900. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, with an altar at the crossing. The foundation stone was blessed on 3 May 1900, and the chapel on 24 September 1900.

Historical Surroundings

In the vicinity of Magoar are the ruins of the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Coëtmaloën and the Église Saint-Nicolas. In the wider regional area around Magoar are the historic site of Abbaye Saint-Croix and the historic site of Peter II Castle. The summit of Ménez Fanteu is also located in the wider regional area.

Religious Sites and Customs

The Fontaine Saint-Gildas is located in Magoar. The spring dates from the 18th century and lies 250 metres from the religious building. Its gable wall has a niche containing a polychrome wooden statue of Saint Gildas. In the past, the Fontaine was the centre of a cult intended to protect dogs from rabies.

The Pardon de Saint-Gildas includes a procession to the Fontaine Saint-Gildas on the last Sunday in January.
