Saint-Eloy-Les-Mines: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Saint-Éloy-les-Mines combines traces of its mining history with a lake and several hiking trails. At the Maison de la Mine, reconstructions of a chambre chaude and a lampisterie illustrate the working world of the past. At the same time, the museum presents the mining history of Saint-Éloy-les-Mines, which began in 1741, as well as the town’s origins.
An immersive space at the Maison de la Mine uses virtual and augmented reality, panoramic screens and three-dimensional machines to plunge visitors into the coal mines.
Another prominent historical testimony is the Chevalement du Puits Saint-Joseph. Built in 1926, it is 40 metres high and weighs 160 tonnes. As a symbol of cultural history, it represents the two centuries of coal mining that profoundly shaped the history of Saint-Éloy-les-Mines.

Water and landscapes
The lake was created as a leisure area after the collapse of mine galleries between the 1950s and 1960s left two large depressions at the southern entrance to the town. Today, there is an unsupervised bathing area on a sandy beach with fine sand; pedal boats can also be rented.
Three hikes start at the lake, exploring Saint-Éloy-les-Mines and the surrounding area. Intended for children aged 6 and over, the “Expert Nature des Combrailles – Les plans d’eau de Saint-Éloy” offering is a discovery kit designed to help them learn about the natural heritage of the Combrailles.
Hiking
The La forêt du Quartier hiking route is a difficult 16-kilometre circular hike with a stated duration of 4 hours and 45 minutes. It follows a body of water to Youx, offers views over the Bouble Valley and Saint-Éloy-les-Mines, and then passes near former mining settlements.
The La forêt du Quartier hike begins at Place Saint-Ménilie, by an 11th-century church. In the old town centre, there is a car park near the church.
