The hiking trail La croix de Georges begins and ends in Vertolaye. It is signposted with yellow PR markings and is a 9.5-kilometre circular hiking route. At Chez Barby, granite emerges from the ferns along the route.

Culture and History
The parish church of Saint-Julien has been protected as a historic monument since 26 November 1990. It dates from the 15th century and has a Latin-cross floor plan. At the end of the 19th century, during the final quarter of that century, it was remodelled by the architect Jules Painchaux in the Southern Gothic style used in Livradois.
Vertolaye’s cultural offerings include the Gare de l’Utopie. In Vertolaye, it is a comic-book library, toy library and cultural third place within the intermunicipal network. It offers a varied cultural programme open to everyone. Gare de l’Utopie also includes the Comme chez vous café, where a games evening is held once a month on a Friday evening.

The mountains Roche Courbe, Peyre Mayou, Procher Ouest and Procher Est are located in the wider regional area around Vertolaye. This wider regional area also includes Château de Saint-Bonnet-le-Chastel as a castle, Château de Couzan as a ruin, Château d'Essertines-en-Châtelneuf as a ruin and Château de Chalain as a castle.
Events
The Fête du cidre was held in Vertolaye on 4 and 5 October 2025. It included apple pressing as well as the sale of cider and apple pastries.
