Nature and Landscape
Lac Pavin is a volcanic maar lake formed around 6,900 years ago, with a depth of 92 m and an area of 44 ha.
The Cascades de Chiloza form a series of numerous waterfalls along the Couze Pavin over 1 km; the riverbed contains potholes eroded into the lava.
The Puy de Chambourguet is a 1,520 m-high volcanic vent above Super-Besse. Its summit offers views of Lac Pavin, the scree slopes and the surrounding area, and marmots can occasionally be spotted.
The summit of the Puy de Chambourguet can be reached from the mountain station of Super-Besse via a marked two-hour round trip.
Culture and History
The cultural and historical tour through Besse takes 45 minutes and includes 14 information panels. The Chapelle Notre-Dame de Vassivière was built in the 16th century, is an important pilgrimage site and houses the Black Madonna every summer.
Besse emerged in the 12th century as a trading crossroads between the Limagne plain and the mountains of the Massif du Sancy. In the 15th century, Besse was surrounded by fortifications. The 16th-century fountain on the Place de la Gayme is listed as a Monument historique.
Since 1994, the Fête de l’estive has begun with a procession of Salers cattle herds through the medieval streets of Besse; at Lac Pavin, 5 km away, traditional craft and agricultural activities are demonstrated.

The Brasserie du Sancy in Besse produces organic beer from pure malt using products that are as local as possible.
