Royat: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The centre of Royat was built on a lava flow of the Chaîne des Puys – Limagne fault. Its history is particularly evident in the spa district and the surviving buildings.

History and Culture

The Taillerie de Royat is fully protected as a historic monument, including its technical facilities and enclosing railings. The Thermes de Royat were built by the architect Agis Ledru and opened in 1856. Monumental arches, Ionic columns and statues there recall the spa town’s Gallo-Roman past.

The Thermes romains were discovered in 1876 during the construction of the railway viaduct. A swimming pool with seating steps and semicircular tiers is still visible from the complex; it has been classified as a historic monument since 1889.

The Église Saint-Léger is a building from the late 12th or early 13th century protected as a historic monument. The fortified complex comprising the church and adjoining priory includes a crypt and still has a preserved rampart walk; access is free.

The Musée de Royat presents the history of Royat and, in particular, the era of fashionable spa culture through historical objects, costumed figures, manuscripts, postcards and posters. The visit is accompanied by the guide Bruno Charrain. The Pavillon Saint-Mart can be visited during exhibitions or through the municipal tourist office.

Nature and Trails

The Arboretum de Royat is located above Royat on the Route du Puy de Dôme, covers 41 hectares and is home to nearly 600 species of centuries-old trees. The Chemin des crêtes offers a panoramic view, runs along the Colombier forest and leads walkers and mountain bikers to the foot of the Puy de Dôme.

The Tiretaine Valley has been landscaped as a park and leads walkers through Royat’s spa district. Two signposted walking trails with free access allow visitors to walk to the Arboretum de Royat.
