Mons: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Location and landscape

The easy circular walk “Autour de Mons” is 4.5 km long, has 80 metres of elevation gain and takes around 1 hour and 15 minutes. It includes a fountain and views of Livradois-Forez and the Chaîne des Puys. At the start near the town hall, there is a signpost and parking. The route passes through flowering meadows and oak trees watered by the Le Buron stream.

The also easy circular walk “De Mons à l’Allier” starts in Mons, is 12 km long, has 165 metres of elevation gain and takes around 3 hours and 30 minutes. It passes through the Limagne plain and offers views of the Monts du Forez and Château de Périgères. Near Port de Ris, the route approaches the Allier River.

History

Until 1537, Mons was a royal provostship. In the 19th century, the town had six mills that supplied the entire canton with flour made from wheat, oats and rye. The former fief of Limons, to which Périgères belonged, is mentioned as early as 1276. Mons also had a tannery and leather workshop founded by Adelaïde d’Orléans.

Buildings and townscape

Château de Périgères is a 17th-century château with interior fittings from the 17th and 18th centuries. The gatehouse also dates from the 17th century and is topped with an imperial roof. The château was extended around 1582; construction work continued in 1660. The 17th-century wing and the gatehouse were registered as protected historic monuments by decree of 10 February 1997.

The Villa de la Presle, built around 1880, was designed both as a prestigious country residence and as a model farm. Its estate includes an English-style landscape park. The villa features an eclectic architectural style with contrasting materials and numerous decorative elements. Inside are painted ceilings, stained-glass windows, fireplaces and wallpaper. Fully protected are the villa, including its decorated interiors, the outbuildings, the park, the access avenue, the enclosures, the hydraulic system and the park structures. Mons is also home to the parish church of Notre-Dame de la Nativité.

Local production

À Deux Pains d'ici produces hand-kneaded, wood-fired organic sourdough bread in its bakery in Les Rigodanches, Mons. Biscuits and brioche specialities are also made there.
