Orbeil: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Orbeil lies on the right bank of the Allier and is surrounded by fields, pastures and vineyards. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Orbeil can find out more about the village here.
Nature
The Ybois hill in Orbeil is an ancient volcano. A mighty fortress once stood on it, but was destroyed under Louis XIII. The Domaine de Vort route in Orbeil is an 8 km loop. The Domaine de Vort hike follows the Allier and passes through wooded sections. The route offers beautiful open views of the Issoire basin; from there, the village of Saint-Yvoine and the Lembron plain can be seen.
The ninth stage of the Via Allier from Vic-le-Comte to Issoire takes cyclists to Orbeil. From Issoire, access to the Domaine de Vort is via the A75, the Orbeil exit, the D9 and then the D14 to the Pont d’Orbeil district.
Culture and History
In November 1586, Marguerite de Valois, known as Queen Margot, sought refuge in the fortress of Ybois. The Sabot d’Orbeil Bourrée Yssoirienne group preserves Auvergne culture through choreographed bourrées and traditional music with cabrettes, accordions and hurdy-gurdies. Sabot d’Orbeil Bourrée Yssoirienne organizes a dance tea every year and welcomes people who would like to dance or learn to dance within the group.
In Orbeil, the idea was to replant a vineyard in order to preserve village traditions and inherited know-how.
