Montpeyroux combines architectural and religious history with hiking trails through arkose landscapes. The “Donjon du XIIIème siècle” was built under the rule of Philippe Auguste or somewhat later, in the second half of the 12th century. Its accessible upper platform offers a 360-degree panoramic view. The “Porte du XIVème siècle” was classified as a historic monument in 1951.

Culture
The Notre-Dame de l’Assomption church is built from arkose; its Neo-Romanesque architecture follows the floor plan of the Auvergne’s major pilgrimage churches. The church contains a collection of stained-glass windows, including the window “The Three Wise Men” by Martial Mailhot, dated 1879.
In the immediate vicinity of Montpeyroux are the ruins of Abbaye Notre-Dame du Bouschet. The ruins of Château de Marchidial, Château de Montpentier and Château de Sarlièves are also located in the surrounding area.
Nature
The Puy d’Ysson mountain is located near Montpeyroux, as are the Puy d’Olloix and Puy Giroux mountains. The Puy de Mazeyres mountain lies in the wider regional surroundings of Montpeyroux.
Hiking
The circular hike “Autour de Montpeyroux” is easy and suitable for families. It is 5.0 km long and takes around two hours, with 160 metres of ascent. The route starts at the village car park, passes the medieval gate and ends back at the car park.
The hike “Sur le chemin de l’Arkose” passes through Pailhat landscapes that recall Montpeyroux’s former wine-growing economy. As a circular hike, it is moderately difficult, 8.5 km long and takes around two and a half hours, with 210 metres of ascent.
“Sur le chemin de l’Arkose” also passes over arkose outcrops with views of the Sancy Massif and the Chaîne des Puys.
