Culture
The original Château de Durtol was built in the 12th century. From 1898, the Château de Durtol housed France’s first sanatorium, dedicated to the treatment of “chest diseases”. Two round towers flank the château; they were built at the end of the 17th century.
Archaeological excavations at Les Côtes de Clermont provide evidence of continuous human presence from the Neolithic period through the Middle Ages.
Landscape
Les Côtes de Clermont is a natural plateau formed by a basalt lava flow 15 million years ago. From the Côte de Pégnu, there are views of the Limagne, the Bois Noirs and the Forez.
A hike at the Côte de Pégnu leads through orchards and vineyards, past old chestnut trees on the Bonnabry plateau near Sarcenat and through pine groves.

The Les Côtes de Clermont hiking trail leads to the oppidum.
The two-day hike “From Durtol to the Chaîne des Puys in 2 days” can be reached from Durtol by taking bus route 10 from the “Square Sabourin” stop or by train from Durtol station. It passes through a varied landscape, from the edge of the Limagne Fault to the vast expanses of the Dômes Plateau; the Puy de Dôme can be seen in the background. It runs through the UNESCO World Heritage site.
Event
The Fête de la Pompe is an annual festival held in Durtol in October and organised by the Confrérie des Talmeniers du Bon Pain and the Amis de Durtol d’autrefois à aujourd’hui.
