Murat: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Murat is a stage of the Via Arverna, a secondary route to Santiago de Compostela connecting Clermont-Ferrand with Cahors. Murat is located within the Parc naturel régional des Volcans d'Auvergne. The town is served by passenger trains running north to Clermont-Ferrand and south to Aurillac and Figeac.

Nature

The Chemin de Bonnevie offers panoramic views of the rooftops of Murat and the Monts du Cantal from the Rocher de Bonnevie, at the foot of the Notre-Dame de la Haute-Auvergne statue. The GR 400 also begins in Murat. The 140-kilometre trail runs through the mid-mountains along the slopes of the Massif cantalien, Europe's largest volcano, and can be completed in eight days or less.

The Maison de la Faune is housed in a former sub-prefecture hotel dating from the 16th century and displays animal collections in reconstructed habitats across four floors. It is home to more than 8,000 species of insects, butterflies and beetles from around the world. The Maison de la Faune also displays nearly 800 mammals and birds in reconstructed habitats.

Culture

Medieval Murat features preserved historic buildings as well as a variety of architectural styles and building materials. The Chapelle Saint-Antoine has major construction phases dating from the 12th, 15th and 16th centuries.

History

The Mémorial de la Déportation commemorates the 103 residents of Murat arrested on 24 June 1944; 75 of them died in the camps. The Mémorial de la Déportation can be visited daily all year round, but only by prior reservation.
