Nature and trails
The Rocher de Laval is a former lava lake, 4.5 million years old, exposed through erosion. Along the route known as the “Chemin des vieilles pierres”, visitors can discover some of the historic treasures of Neussargues-Moissac.
On 25 July 2004, the Joursac–Moissac–Chalinargues section of the Via Arverna was inaugurated; Neussargues was intended to be a stage town.
Culture and history
The Church of Saint-Hilaire de Moissac was built in the 12th century in place of a Carolingian structure. It has a ridge belfry that is unique in the Auvergne and is completely enclosed by a monumental staircase. Its furnishings also include an exceptional pulpit and a polychrome baptismal font.
The restored Four de Laval has a lintel bearing the date 1734. The Neussargues basin contains prehistoric remains from the rock shelters of Cuzers.
Neussargues-Moissac railway station historically quickly became the most important railway junction in Cantal. Olivier Messiaen composed two works at the château. A new chapel was inaugurated in 1912. The 15th-century château is privately owned.
Local flavours
Cafés des Puys operates an artisan roastery for speciality coffee in Neussargues-Moissac. Distillerie Hautes Terres is an independent family distillery specialising in the production of Single Malt and Rye whisky.
